st matthew passion – js bach concert

Royston Choral Society (RCS) is a friendly choir of around 80 singers from a wide range of backgrounds and singing abilities united by enjoying singing together to produce memorable concerts.

This April, they are performing a musical masterpiece, Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion, in Royston.
As rehearsals began for one of the biggest performances in the choir’s 50 year history, singers were asked why they would chose Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion as a desert island disc.

Choir members highlighted the dramatic quality of the story-telling, the tenderness of the music, and their personal emotional responses from the stirring opening bars and throughout this great work.
For bass Neil Heywood, his reasons for taking the Saint Matthew Passion to a desert island were personal and practical:

“The whole work is a huge treasure store of wonderfully diverse music so, if cast away, there would always be something new to discover.
“More than that, it’s an intense and dramatic story which would always engage my imagination and my emotions, even after many hearings.”
Join Neil and other castaways, soloists, and full orchestra at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist in Royston on Saturday 5th April at 7pm to discover why Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion means so much to so many music-lovers.
