Outdoor Essentials

As the weather warms up and you venture out to the countryside, why not elevate your family days out with these essential items?
Clever clothes
We are blessed with an abundance of green and glorious countryside, largely thanks to our temperate and wet weather. That’s why it’s wise to invest in light, breathable garments and one light, waterproof layer in preparation for four seasons in one day.
Comfortable footwear
Sturdy, snug walking boots or shoes are a must for exploring the countryside. Ensure everyone in the family has footwear that provides good support and is appropriate for uneven and muddy terrain.
Picnic essentials
Is there a simpler joy in life than a well-planned picnic? Blankets with a water-resistant bottom layer, a spacious, insulated picnic bag with cool blocks, reusable plastic plates, cups and cutlery plus, most importantly, a bottle opener for that well-earned bottle of wine or beer.
Water bottles
Carry plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated throughout the day.
Thermos
Insulated travels cups and flasks are cool again! A good thermos is perfect to keep your hot chocolate, coffee or tea piping hot… or your ice-cold lemonade effortlessly chilled!
Maps and GPS
While many paths are well-marked, having a physical map and GPS device or smartphone with offline maps can save you a lot of hassle (and many wrong turns!).
First aid kit
A basic first aid kit is essential for treating minor injuries. Include plasters, antiseptic wipes, pain relief and any personal medications.
Whistle and torch
Depending on how adventurous you’re feeling, a whistle for attracting attention (in the event of someone getting lost) and a torch (for unexpected low-light situations) are critical safety items.
Nature activity kits
Getting kids off their digital devices is not easy, but binoculars, magnifying glasses and nature guides can make exploring a lot more fun.
Toys
Simple toys like frisbees, balls or kites are a great way to counteract the inevitable cries of “I’m bored!”. Choose lightweight and easy-to-pack options.
Books
If you do get a moment’s peace, stop scrolling online and enjoy the moment with a good book.
Lightweight chairs and tables
If you’re too posh to picnic on the grass, portable chairs and tables can make the experience more comfortable. Look for foldable and lightweight options.
Sun protection
Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses are essential for protecting against UV rays, even on cloudy days.
Rubbish bags
Keeping the countryside clean is important. Carry waste bags to collect any rubbish and dispose of it properly.
Backpacks
Finally, taking at least one decent backpack to store all your gear is imperative. Go for something spacious, lightweight and waterproof that has decent support for your spine. This one item really has the potential to make or break your outdoor adventure.
