Heritage Open Days

Heritage Open Days are England’s largest festival of history and culture.


Every September thousands of volunteers across England organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.


The event runs from 12th-21st September, here are some of the most local venues:

Place House Hall Open Day
Place House, Bluecoat Yard, Ware, SG12 9HL
Sun 14th Sep, 11.30am-3.30pm
Pre-booking not required. Ware’s Place House stands in a small walled courtyard in the centre of Ware and is a building of Grade I national historic and architectural importance.Talk at 2.30pm on the history of Place House by Miss Dorothy Abel Smith.

Children’s Activities at Place House Hall
Sat 13th Sept, 11.30am-4pm
Pre-booking not required
History activities for children, refreshments.

Hertford Castle Heritage Day
Hertford Castle, SG14 1HR
Sun 21st Sept, 12noon-4pm
Pre-booking not required. Celebrating Hertford’s rich historical and cultural heritage with a day of activities and entertainment.

Matching, Handling and Colouring: Families
Bishop’s Stortford Museum, CM23 3JG
Sat 13th Sept, Drop in, 10am-1pm
Get involved in various free activities for families.

Architecture of Ware
Ware Museum, SG12 9AD
Sat 13th, Tues 16th, Wed 17th, Sat 20th Sept, 11am-4pm, Sun 14th & Sun 21st Sept, 2-4pm
Pre-booking not required. An architectural discovery trail around Ware Museum and a self-guided walk around the town.
