Braughing’s Legendary Fair & Wheelbarrow Race

Excitement is building as preparations begin for one of the region’s most iconic village events – the Braughing Fair and Wheelbarrow Race!

The event takes place on Saturday 12th July 2025 from 12 noon to 6pm in the village of Braughing.
There is a vibrant village fete featuring stalls, a fun fair, a bar, and delicious food options – there’s something for everyone.
Visitors can also enjoy a dog show, a spectacular falconry display, and soak up the lively atmosphere throughout the village.
Not to mention the famous wheelbarrow races themselves!

The Wheelbarrow Race started in 1964. It is a quirky, unique and hilarious event where children and adults dress up and take part in various age-appropriate races in wheelbarrows – involving beer and getting wet in the Ford.
Teams of two people don fancy dress and take it in turns to push each other around a 400 metre course (adult course only, the children’s races are shorter).

The race starts with one person running through the Ford, drinking half a beer (from the Golden Fleece pub) and then jumping into the wheelbarrow.

The pusher then pushes their team mate around the course, stopping at the other two village pubs (The Axe and Compasses and The Brown Bear) for more half pints. We hope for The Brown Bear to be open again by 12th July, but if it’s not, there will be a beer station outside of the pub for the wheelbarrowers. Then, swapping pushers, the race finishes back at the Ford for a good soaking.
Children’s races obviously don’t involve beer, but have squash instead!

Set to attract between 2,500 & 3,000 visitors, this much-loved annual event promises a fantastic day out for all ages.

Sponsorship Opportunities – The organisers are once again inviting local businesses and individuals to support the event through sponsorship. This vital support ensures the ongoing success of the fair and raises important funds for community amenities. Sponsors are acknowledged with banners at the event and recognition in the official programme.
