Barkway Local History Group was established in 2018 to research the village’s history for residents and the wider community.
In March 2026, the group reopened The Reading Room and Barkway Local History Museum at 12 High Street following refurbishment. New lighting and display units provide an inviting space for local archaeological finds and displays about Barkway’s history. The museum is open on the last Sunday of each month from 2–4pm.
The group’s first publication, Beer, Beds and Stabling by Jon Mein, explores Barkway’s role as a staging post on the London to Cambridge road. It will be published at Barkway Literary Festival on 3rd October, where Jon will give a free talk at 7pm.
Copies will be available for £10 from Bow Books in Royston and at the festival.
