Open Eco Homes 2024, now in its 15th year, is set to showcase the future of sustainable living with 9 trailblazing homes opening their doors this Autumn.
The free expert-led tours and talks offer a unique opportunity for individuals to gain insights into making their homes more environmentally friendly, while also considering the economic costs and advantages of such improvements, with early-adopter hosts eager to show you around their eco homes and share their fascinating stories, including their triumphs and setbacks.
Homes across Cambridgeshire are featured, including Histon, Willingham, Stapleford and Great Paxton.
“Our hosts this year started their home improvement journeys for a variety of reasons, from improving accessibility, investing to lower bills, wanting greater resilience to future energy shocks, and just wanting to create a greener, healthier home for their family. The majority have reached the same conclusion: it is possible to create your dream home whilst cutting bills and carbon. I’ve been blown away by their enthusiasm to share their stories and what they have learned to help others take the step towards a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly home,” says Fran Sutton, Open Eco Homes spokesperson.
This year’s programme features both new builds and retrofitted homes, demonstrating a range of approaches to achieving lower carbon emissions and energy costs. There are homes with air source heat pumps, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage systems, mechanical heat ventilation and recovery systems, advanced insulation, natural materials, draught-proofing, high-performance windows and doors, and rainwater harvesting. There is an opportunity for everyone to find out something that interests them.
